The fact is this day which commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in 1862 is NOT a major holiday in Mexico. It's not Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated Sept. 16.
Cinco de Mayo has become more popular in the United States simply because beer, tequila makers and bars want to drum up business.
