Why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo

And the truth is I have no special plans to celebrate this holiday.

The fact is this day which commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in 1862 is NOT a major holiday in Mexico. It's not Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated Sept. 16.

Cinco de Mayo has become more popular in the United States simply because beer, tequila makers and bars want to drum up business.

A friend of mine on Facebook appropriately dubbed today "Drinko de Mayo."

But rather than down tequila shots, I'd like to see today be about people doing something meaningful for the Latino community in the United States.

Mentor a child. Volunteer to help someone learn English. Take a stand on the Arizona immigration law.
